Do you ever feel like you know what you are meant to do in your life, you are confident in where you need to be, but for some reason you just can’t get moving? Maybe you feel like even though you have found your passion, your reason for life, for some reason you are stuck at this 20-foot-high brick wall and nothing you are doing is moving it. I have been there.
When you hit that wall it is really easy to slip into a negative train of thought. Without hesitation we begin to doubt our passion, our qualifications, our training, and most of all ourselves. In every growth process there will be hurdles. These hurdles will range from a stick on the ground to step over, to these 20-foot-high brick walls. How do we get over the wall?
One thing I have found is that when we approach the brick wall, it often times starts as a 10-foot-high brick wall. Then as we remain sitting in that spot, thinking of ways to get over the wall, it seems to grow. At this point if you have hit the wall at some point in your life, you are probably nodding in agreeance. The wall when you are standing there looking at it, seems to rise higher and higher as the moments pass by. Why? Why does this once difficult but reasonable hurdle seem so impossible now?
I was once told by an amazing man
“you can talk yourself into anything if you really want to”
Well, the same applies to the opposite. With self-talk we are able to talk ourselves out of anything as well. When that 10-foot wall presents itself, we see our inadequacies. We are staring face to face with everything that we aren’t sure about.
Maybe you are a graphic designer and you are launching your business. You are confident as you grow your website and your marketing skills. You have a few great clients who want basic sites and you’re confident in this. Then you get a client, the client, the 10-foot-brick wall client. They tell you they want EVERYTHING custom. They want you to be their website designer as well as teach people to use the site, develop a custom portal that will take clients directly to another area of the site, among other advanced pieces. They are willing to pay you good money, but you freeze and feel like that wall is going to hinder you.
Even though you may have been trained in the area, you’re likely doubting your skills at this point. When doubt creeps in, negative thinking then follows. Our self-talk goes from confident to defeated. This is when the wall starts growing. This is where we get stuck in our lives. So, how do we get unstuck?
There are a couple ways, one way is to simply change your thinking. Change your thought patterns to I can statements. Become your own personal cheerleader. Another way you can change this is to confide in someone who will be honest, but uplifting at the same time. Turn to your support system and look for a shoulder to stand on while you climb over the wall.
Lastly, look toward the future. When you climb over this wall and hit the other side, what happens? Do you get paid? Will you feel more confident in your abilities? Maybe it will add something to your resume. At the end of the day it is another hurdle, another thing conquered, another thing that made you that much stronger. You can climb the wall, you can do the unthinkable, you are amazingly you.
